The Holy Spirit: A New Lens

When we get our eyesight checked the optometrist adjusts the lenses and then asks, “This is A; This is B…which is better?”

As we continue our series Working on our Core, we will explore The Holy Spirit, probably the least understood member of The Trinity. We have tried our best to create some symbols to see and understand God who is “Three-in-One.” Richard Rohr, in The Divine Dance, lifts up our attempts to comprehend our Triune God. St. Patrick offered the shamrock, a single clover with three lobes. Rohr writes about the inadequacy of the shamrock, namely that it is static and not moving. We have used water’s three forms (steam, ice, fluid) but one substance. Rohr lifts up the image of three dancers who move and flow into one another and reminds us that we will never fully understand The Trinity because it is a mystery!

Here are new lenses for The Holy Spirit:

Whatever is going on in God is a flow, a radical relationship, a perfect communion between Three – a circle dance of love.

– Richard Rohr, 21st Century

Effortlessly,

Love flows from God into man,

Like a bird

Who rivers the air

Without moving her wings.

Thus we move in (God's) world

One in body and soul,

Though outwardly separate in form.

As the Source strikes the note,

Humanity sings --

The Holy Spirit is our harpist,

And all strings

Which are touched in Love

Must sound.

-Mechthild of Magdeburg, German mystic, 13th Century

Please read John 14:15-27 to prepare your heart for worship. I look forward to seeing you in church!
